Cylinder and Keying Requirements
The cylinder and key system determines how a keyed padlock operates and how keys are organized within an order. Before processing, Raviron confirms the selected padlock model, cylinder structure, number of keys per lock and required keying arrangement.
Common order requirements include Keyed Different (KD), where each padlock operates with its own key combination, and Keyed Alike (KA), where a confirmed group of padlocks shares the same key combination. Master-key requirements require model-specific evaluation because not every cylinder or padlock structure supports the same system.
Keying requirements should be provided before quotation. Changing from KD to KA after production has started may affect cylinder preparation, key allocation, inspection and packing.
Cylinder Component Preparation
Depending on the model, the cylinder assembly may include a cylinder housing, plug, pins, springs and other internal components. Component dimensions must correspond with the lock body and the selected key profile.
Preparation checks may cover:
- Cylinder diameter and body compatibility
- Plug rotation and component movement
- Pin and spring specification
- Keyway profile and matching key blank
- Surface condition and visible damage
- Quantity and batch separation
The cylinder must fit the machined lock body without excessive looseness or interference. Relevant body dimensions are established during padlock body machining and stamping.
Key Blank Cutting and Processing
The correct key blank is selected according to the cylinder keyway and padlock model. Key profiles are then processed to correspond with the internal cylinder combination.
After cutting, keys are checked for visible deformation, sharp burrs and correct insertion into the cylinder. Poorly finished key edges can affect handling, while an incorrect profile may prevent full insertion or smooth rotation.
The required quantity of keys per padlock must also be confirmed. Standard projects may use two or three keys per lock, but the final quantity depends on the selected model and buyer specification.
KD, KA and Grouped Keying
For KD orders, cylinders and keys are organized to reduce unintended duplication within the confirmed production arrangement. The available number of combinations depends on the cylinder structure and order quantity.
For KA orders, the buyer should state whether the complete order uses one key combination or whether separate KA groups are required. Group sizes, group identification and replacement-key quantities should be confirmed before production.
If master keys or more complex key hierarchies are requested, buyers should provide a clear keying schedule for feasibility review. Additional tooling, sampling or documentation may be required depending on the system.
Key Matching and Functional Checks
Cylinder and key preparation is not complete until the parts are checked together. Inspection includes key insertion, rotation, cylinder movement and correspondence between the assigned key and cylinder.
During product assembly and key matching, the prepared cylinder is fitted into the corresponding lock body. Finished-lock checks then verify locking, release, shackle movement and key removal according to the selected mechanism.
Sample Approval and Bulk-Order Control
For OEM projects, the sample should confirm the cylinder type, key appearance, number of keys, keying arrangement and finished locking operation. Custom samples generally take around 7–15 days depending on the padlock structure and other branding or packaging requirements.
The approved sample and confirmed keying schedule provide references for bulk production. Keyed groups should remain separated through assembly, inspection and packing to reduce allocation errors.
