Shackle Specifications Before Production
The shackle must fit the lock body, locking mechanism and intended locking point. Before production, Raviron confirms the shackle material, rod diameter, internal height, internal width, surface finish and required padlock body.
Carbon steel and stainless steel are common shackle materials, but the suitable option depends on the padlock model, application, surface requirement and target cost. Any special material grade, hardness or corrosion-resistance requirement must be provided before quotation and sampling.
Shackle stock is prepared after the material specification has been confirmed through our padlock material preparation process.
Cutting and Length Preparation
Metal rod is cut according to the developed length required for the finished shackle. The blank length must account for the bending radius, finished internal clearance and the sections entering the lock body.
Standard, short and long shackles require different blank lengths. A longer shackle is not produced simply by extending the visible upper section; the overall geometry must remain compatible with the body holes and locking points.
Cut lengths are separated by model and batch before forming. Mixing different diameters or lengths can cause incorrect clearances during later assembly.
Shackle Bending and Forming
The cut rod is formed into the required U-shaped profile. The bending setup depends on the rod diameter, material and specified internal width and height.
The formed shackle must align with the two shackle holes in the lock body. Incorrect spacing, unequal leg length or visible distortion can result in difficult assembly, uneven movement or unreliable locking and release.
For long-shackle models, dimensional control is especially important because a small angular deviation becomes more noticeable over the extended length. Buyers can review the main dimensional variables on our size and shackle customization page.
Grooves, Notches and End Processing
Depending on the locking structure, the shackle legs may require grooves, notches, flats or other machined positions that engage with the internal locking components. These features must correspond with the selected cylinder and body structure.
Processing may include:
- Cutting the shackle to the confirmed blank length
- Forming the required curve and internal clearance
- Machining locking grooves or notches
- Preparing the shackle ends for body insertion
- Removing burrs and sharp edges
- Checking leg spacing and finished dimensions
The exact operations vary by padlock model. Structural changes must be evaluated together with the lock body and internal mechanism rather than treating the shackle as an independent part.
Surface Preparation and Protection
After forming and machining, shackles are cleaned and prepared for the required surface treatment. Options may include polishing, plating or another model-specific finish.
The base material and surface condition influence the final appearance. Scratches, burrs or inconsistent preparation may remain visible after finishing, while excessive coating buildup can affect fit with the body holes. Additional information is available on our surface finishing and plating page.
Dimensional and Body-Fit Checks
Before assembly, selected shackles are checked for rod diameter, internal width, internal height, leg spacing, groove position, surface appearance and fit with the corresponding lock body.
A complete sample is used to confirm shackle insertion, locking, release and movement before bulk production. Custom samples normally require around 7–15 days, depending on the structure, material, finish and other OEM requirements.
For quotation, please provide the padlock type, body dimensions, shackle diameter, required internal clearance, material, finish, order quantity and intended application. Photos of the door hasp, chain or locking point are also useful when fit is the main concern. After approval, processed shackles proceed to padlock assembly and key matching.
